Informing ideas for narrative
Idea1: Walter Rodney
Age: 38
Occupation: Political activist, Author, Academic, historian
My first idea is to create a documentary sorrounding the life of a political activist from Guyana called Walter Rodney. Walter Rodney was a Guyanese historian and political activist as well as author. One of his notable works include How Europe underdeveloped Africa, published in 1972. He was assassinated in Georgetown Guyana in 1980. He was born in the working class family in Georgetown Guyana in 1942.
Idea 2: Unit 731
For my second idea i am thinking on making a documentary sorrounding the biological unit project 731.
Idea 3: rise of cancel culture
My third idea is covering the broad topic regarding cancel culture. Cancel culture also known as call out culture is a phrase that refers to a from of ostracism. It revolves around the idea of someoeone being thrust out of social circles. Wether it be online or in person. The effects of cancel culture also being called cancelled shuns someone from society by constantly oppressing and targeting them mostly on social media for many reasons. The main reasons can be when someoene speaks in a certain manner in acts in a way that is unacceptable.
Final idea: rise of cancel culture
My final idea is to make a documentary sorrounding the concept and rise of cancel culture. Cancel culture covers a broad area of topics in society, wether be race, culture, religion, politics and sexuality.
Research of cancel culture
This is my recent research of videos that i have watched on videos that ive watched that cover the topic of cancel culture.
Research: cancel culture

Cancel culture refers to the withdrawal of mass support from public figures who have said or done things that are socially accepted within the viewpoint of the public. This act of shunning or boycotting someone can impact someone not only in social circles such as social media but also professional circles as well, as cancel cultures effects is notorious for even causing cases of people losing their jobs. Some sources say that the roots of cancel culture came up from the obscure slang term cancel which refer to breaking up with someone. Since then the term has been referenced in film, television and came to evolve to and gain traction on social media. It has been an idea that is deeply contested in political discourse within America over the past years.
Cancel Culture: What different sources say
This article explains in an depth article the toxicity and counter productivity of cancel culture and how when this form of social power is abused, it can fuel hate and oppression. Cancel culture is a form of boycott as someone is ostracized for their bad behaviour, for instance the article Chrissy Teigen being cancelled for cyber bullying and DR Seuss for allegations of racism. Cancel culture to some is seen as an effective way to shame deter current and future behaviours. Cancel culture fails to acknowledge and target the systemic and social issues that are at the root of hateful behaviour rather than focusing on individual accountability.
Cancel culture shames and judges peoples individual beliefs as unacceptable but fails to educate said individual on the problematics and errors on their beliefs. Professionals say that cancel culture creates an us versus them dynamic that amplifies the problem rather than addressing said problems.
Another problem with cancelling in an individual is that even person is said cancelled it doesn't mean that person is entirely silenced and through empowerement can acquire public support and fight against the cancellation and stand by their beliefs. An example of this can be Kanye West. Kanye Wests social media platforms have been restriected due to his antisemitic comments however he has now bought the right wing parler as an alternative and combating objectional messages.
