Rule  of three

Today i was taught about the use of the rule of three in camera shots. The rule of three is a reliable guideline for framing camera shots. It is a process of dividing images into thirds, using two horizontal and vertical lines.

The imaginary grid nine parts with four intersection points.  When positioning the most important elements of your shot images on those intersection points, you produce an image that is more natural.

The rule of third is a composition and framing method used to create a conversation between the subject and the background.

The background the subject is within has a stronger impact when in the rule of third frame as well building more of an interest and focus on the main subject in front of an audience.

My camera shots

These are the camera shots i took of my friend outside of college. Inspired by the learning and understanding of the rule of thirds i tried to implement that in my camera shots though i feel like the closest shot i got to that was remotely close to rule of thirds is the shot above.

I watched a video on how to use the airbrush tool. I am going  to use the airbrush tool in order to learn how to edit and change the flaws within a subject such as acne, spots or any kind facial discrepancies in order to  make a better quality image  that looks more appealing.

Title sequence: Induction

The intro

In the intro we are displayed with the scenery of a street with a green door central to the shot. In this scene the temporary lack of movement leaves us as the audience confused yet with the feeling of anticipation as we are waiting for what happens next. It also gives time to observe and process what is in the shot such as the pro Nazi graffiti to the right. As the green door is the central piece of imagery that is standing out due to its green colour we can anticipate that the something or someone is going to come out of it and bring an end to the stillness.

Dynamic entrance

Suddenly we are hit with a dynamic entrance  as the boy jumps out the door shouting  hail hitler. This puts the audience on edge as shocked as the context is somewhat unsettling but very controversial.

Camera movement

The camera then proceeds to move with the subject as he runs down the street

Historical context

The shots then switches into showing historical clips of hitler. The transition from the kid running across the street to then the old school aesthetic scenery of the historical context of hitlers reign makes the audience somewhat overwhelmed as there is such a fast paced movement of controversial and history it is resembles and reflects the intensity of those times.

The shot here is split into four clips in unison of the boy banging on the drums. The pop of the four different screens make it seem like theres is verebration when the shots are mixed with the drums.

You can clearly tell th

Intro scene

The intros comes in and opens like an eye or volcano which gives it a dramatic effect.

Historical context

The intro then transitions to the time period 1945.

We are then shown even more scenes of history during the end of world war 2.

After effects workshop 1: title sequence production

This is my comp tab.

I created a new comp file and just called it comp 1.

This is my effects and presets tab. This is where i can add one or multiple effects to my image or video for various results and aesthetics.

This is my timeline. This is where the timeline of my video will be where i am able to play it, rewind it and even shorten/cut the timeline.

I renamed the screenshots i took of the different tabs on After Effects to their designated names. This is to remember which tabs are which and their functions.

I titled the screenshots their designated names. I named the effects tab the effects window.

I placed all my screenshots and the motion graphic videos into a folder i created called AE. This organized my work into one recognisable file that i can come back to later.

I used this font website called dafont.com. This is where i will be choosing the font to use in my title sequence production. and the website i am going to be using to gather different fonts for my After effects and photoshop projects.  This website is useful cause it has wide range of text fonts with different aesthetics and art styles.

Screenshot 2022-09-12 at 11.34.47.png

In this section there are two files i am going to be downloading that i will be using for my title sequence. I downloaded two track mattes alpha matte and alpha inverted track matte switch. This the effect i am going to use for my title sequence.

I found this God of War font while scrolling through dafonts. I chose this font because i like its sharp style and its reference to one of my favourite video games God of War.

i downloaded the font and then  clicked on the keys cmd and t which led me to this file  page called true type font which is where i installed the God of War  font.

I then typed in my font into my after effects font tab.

This is my name in the God of War font.

Linear color key

I went to my effects and presets tab and selected the linear key effect. The linear color key is used for shades. The linear color key works with the white background compared to

Linear key settings.

I experimented with the color keys settings. The linear color key is useful for giving shades and works well with the white background.

AE presets settings

Flip vertical

I created another layer of my comp and then right clicked and went to my transform and clicked on flip vertical. This duplicates the same effect with it coming up. So i have one effect coming down and one coming up which creates a nice opening sequence as it blends around my title.

Moving the effects to each side

I moved the effects to each side. This is to further the aesthetic of the title as the smoke is coming from both sides of the title from inverted directions. This is to bring a cool and dynamic effect that

The music videos wide range of landscape camera angles establishes a setting of mood as it blends with the melancholic sound of the music. The artist displays a monster like logo in the intro which shows us the selling of his brand/image.

Bruno mars: the lazy song

The music  videos close up shot angle of Bruno mars singing directly at the camera with the fellow dancers captivates the audience's' attention as he is looking and singing directly at us. This makes his song more intimate as it gives the impression that he is directly addressing the audience.

Rod wave: Cold Decmber

The first shot we get of this song is a wide birds eye view shot of the landscape the music video is set in. It creates an atmosphere and helps to give an idea of what the music videos narrative may entail. It will possibly to entail a story of love or loneliness as winter has a synonymous connection with loneliness and love.

We get more shots of the environment at different angles, ones from a more defined birds eye view shot and another one from a down to earth close up shot. The different shots taken of the environment at different angles creates a story in and of itself as the setting of the video establishes mood.

J cut, L cut, Match on action

J cut and L cut

An L cut is when the next scene's imagery stays consistent but the audio remains the same and carries over to the next shot.

A J  cut is the reverse of an L cut as when the audio comes in before the following clips imagery it is called a J cut. A J cut is when the audio precedes the scenes of the visuals.

J cuts and L cuts are used in order to allow and editor to create a better and more natural flow between reaction shots when breaking up a conversation.

R&B

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_and_bluesR&B (Rhythm and Blues) is a genre that originates from the African-American communities in the 1940s. R&B is a genre of music established by the black community that had the predominate theme of reflecting on Black artists lives and experiences, including racial, political, romantic and economic elements that impacted artists and the overall community.

The term  Rhythm & Blues was used to  replace the more offensive race music due to how offensive it was. When the genre was new artists had to define  the genre that people didn't know and make their mark as individual artists within the genre.

It is a beautiful and extensive genre that conveys emotion alongside passion.

People  like R&B for how relatable it is in peoples daily lives such as love and relationships as well as how accessible and creative its old soul samples are. Some R&B fans and enthusiasts of today R&B's meaning has become less significant in today's time compared to in the past.

The use of more electronic tools than natural instruments such as the saxophones.

Some  say the genre has gotten lazy as some say anyone can jump on a R&B track. Others say the changes of R&B has helped to go forward at the end of the day the artists of today have been  molded by the artists of the past who pioneered the genre. Artists of today still pay homage to artist before them as icons and still include elements such as samples of their musics into their projects.

What is a music video

Recording Music
Music Equipment

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_video

A music video is video that integrates a music song and imagery in a variable length. The purpose of a music video is to promote a musical artist and a their brand. Especially in modern times music videos are used as a marketing device

Art form within music videos

Art is used in a music video by artists to form and emphasise expressions within the artist themselves as well as the narrative within their videos. Art in a music video is used to display emotion, beauty, humour and even intellect with the main purpose of conveying a message.

Production of music videos

The production of a music video is the reverse of a film as it is the music that is produced first then the footage of the film to match or express the song.

The power of a music video

The impact the video aspect can bring to a music video can be in a way that the music itself cant fully bring out in an audience. The power of a music video can take a song and help people visualise it in a way that they wouldn't be able to had there not been a music video to bring about that perspective. The visuals tell a story or narrative and help to bring an even stronger connection to it and turn it into a lasting effect on an audience that lasts for a very long time.

The music videos shots did good at being in sync with the lyrics which helped strengthen the illustration of the music videos story.

Camera Shots

The long shot

This camera shot that i took of my friend is a long shot angle. It is a long shot angle as the subject figure is featured from head to toe in relation to his entire surroundings. We used the long to create a physical space that establishes the subject in the middle in order to establish mood. The subject looking in front him whilst being in the center gives the impression he is looking far or having distant thoughts.

Low angle shot

In this picture we used the long angle shot. The  purpose of the low angle shot is to establish a subject that shows either his power or superiority or his vulnerability. In this i took of my friend the aim of using the low angle shot was to convey a scene of power as he his looking down at the camera. The expression in his face was to further emphasise this as the subject gives off this confident impression represented from his face as he is looking  down at the camera.

High angle shot

In this picture we used a high angle shot. The way we executed the high angle shot was to

Birds eye view shot

This is a birds eye view shot. There are multiple subjects looking down at the ground at a head level shot in unison. This establishes a setting and mood of unity.

Low angle shot

This is another low angle shot. This shot is less towering than the first low angle shot as the shot is more on the subjects upper body rather than an entire body shot.

This angle that i took a picture of my subject called the dutch angle shift. The camera is shifted upward to the right

The music poster has a mixture of retro/techno aesthetic . You have the main image being the major focus on the. right.

The poster has a lot going on. The main header is at the top with the main subject in the middle. The fonts and shapes are combined well to bring out a sense of mystery and rebellion. The EM spectrum going through the triangle conveys a message on the subject of reflection and enlightenment.

The way this poster is layered out. The layout is unique as the there is multiple imagery subjects and heading/subheadings. The art form creates a burst of energy with a jazzy vibe that brings excitement yet a calm and relaxed energy. The typography is

The poster has white background with red writing which makes it simplistic but eye catching at the same time as the fonts and subject image stand out more.

lThe poster has a split layout with the heading, subheading and information on one side with the filler image and image subject on the right side in the filler image.

Music poster design: Retro style

Subject

I chose a picture of one of my friends i took a picture of from a previous lesson i chose this picture because i like the angle that the picture is taken at as there is a cl

Subject in photoshop

I placed the picture in photoshop and filled it into the background.

Opening up photoshop

I opened up photoshop and created my file. I then selected the color pallet and clicked on solid color. And then i  changed the background color from  white to black. The black background is how my subject image is going to  stand with the retro wave style i am going to make.

Shape tool

I then went to the shape tool to my left tab and selected the ellipse tool. The reason being i chose the ellipse tool is because this is the shape my retro design is going to be in. The idea is to make it an oval encompassing shape that hovers behind the head of my subject.

Colour selection

To the top left section of all the tools i  clicked on the tab shapes then clicked on fill. This is where i am going to give ellipse shape colour. I am going to go with the color pink as i think it is a very bright colour filled with energy. This is how i want my subject to stand out as, a subject beaming with energy that creates a mood of excitement and intrigue.

Retro shape

This is how my retro design looks. I like the colour because it will give my subject energy and make him look electric.

Applying outer glow

The next step is to give the shape an outer glow. I then went to the FX tab to apply outer glow. The outer glow will give off an outer pink glow of the colour of the shape. This will make both the style and subjects image and presence stronger and more powerful as it applies more energy to the subject.

Outer glow settings.

This is the settings for the outer glow. I was playing around with the settings and learning how to input the best settings to get the best effect. I put the opacity at 80 to make it brighter and stand out more, the size at 250 to make the glow bigger and put the range at 66. The range at 66 is a good enough range for the outer glow to be at  so as  to not obstruct or move away any focus from the subject.

Placing the subject within the retro design

I placed the subject in the retro background. I had to create the background first then place subject in after. I need to first get rid of the background around the subject soi selected the pen tool in order to select only the subject.

Removing the background.

However there was in issue with  using the pen tool as the pen tool is a process that can take time to use as it takes a lot of focus and precision in order to accurately cut out the background and not the subject. Therefore i chose to do a  quicker and more efficient method of removing the background from the subject. I went and clicked on to my color tab and clicked on the quick action remove background. This quick action instantly removed the background which i found really helpful.

Creating another layer

I then created a new layer. This is where i am going to use my paint brush tool and color in my subject to add a hue that matches the retro design. I clicked on the clipping mask to make the layer connect to the subject so the paint brush goes on to my subject.

Brush tool

I coloured the subject in blue because the color matches with the pink retro circle as the two colors blend together making the subject look more defined in its features.

Dpi/resolution

DPI (dots per inch) is the measuring the resolution of a printed document or digital scan. The higher the dot density means the higher the resolution of the print scan will be. It is the measurement of the number of dots that can be placed in a line across one inch or 2.54 centimetres.

The sharper an image will be depends on how much DPI is used and when there is more DPI being used that high resolution image will provide printers and printing devices more information. It enables greater detail and resolution the DPI an image has.

When an image has low DPI it produces an image with fewer dots for the printer to print which makes harder to produce a high quality image as the printer doesn't have enough data to produce a high quality image. The ink will spread on the page making the images look fuzzy.

Experimenting with the camera

AU: Sound recreation

For today's lesson i am tasked with mixing and editing sound effects for an existing footage. The link to the footage along with the sound effects are in the pinned link for me to  download.

Adobe audition

This is the standard look for Adobe Audition when entering it. To the top left you have your waveform and multitrack. The waveform is where you can play and record audio where as the multitrack is where you edit sound.

Importing files into AU

I then proceeded to import the video footage and audio files from the website on to my Multi track using the command keys CMD+I. This is a shortcut for import.

Moving the audio.

I was just playing with the audio at this point. I moved the car effect audio more closer to the end just to get an understanding of the sounds im supposed to make in order improve the timing and mix of the cars sound effects.

Rearranging the video footage.

I tried rearranging the car footage by moving backwards. The idea is to try and get the footage in sync with the audio and then try to work from there.

Music video: Narrative

In todays lesson i'm learning how to create a linear/narrative music video with the purpose of telling a story.

Levitate

I chose this song from  imagine dragons called levitate. I like this song because it has alot of bass mixed with a nice melody combined with a techno like beat which gives fills the song with more energy. It is an enjoyable song for me and tells a  story through its heartfelt and impactful lyrics.

I copied the video URL and converted into an MP3 128K.

Your name

I chose the music video AMV called sparke. It is from an anime film called your name. The videos animations and scenes will go well with the song i chose as there is a lot of starryy and night sky shots in the song as well as it touching on the concept of Romance.

I copied the videos url and converted it using y2mate. I converted it into 720p quality. This is the standard quality for most TV's therefore i does not need to be of a higher quality.

Intro clip

What i have done here is marked in and out the opening of the clip of the AMV and made it the intro to my opening music video.

Selecting my second clip

For this clip i selected in and out for as the girl is running around the mountain. I think it's wide shot zoom out of the girl running around the mountain would make a smooth opening for the intro of the song.

Third clip.

The third scene i chose is a zoom out shot of a city going all the way back to the subject staring at the scenery from the top of a building. For this scene im going to apply a transition dissolve effect to create that flow from the girl running across the mountain zoomed out to a dissolve transition of another zoom out of another subject in a city on top of a building.

Cross dissolve effect

I used the cross dissolve effect for my third scene. The effect allows the scene to transition into a dissolve like affect into another scene which creates a flow between the two scenes. My use of the dissolve effect worked well as it achieved the effect i wanted it to which was to create a smooth transition between my first and second clip.

Editing the speed and duration

I edited the speed and duration of my clip because i want to slow down the zoom out as it is too fast and changes to the next clip too quickly.

Photoshop: pop art

Choice of imagery

My subject image for my popart is a image of a rapper called NBA Youngboy. I chose this image because it is of a good quality as well as the subject being one of my personal favourite artists is what makes me want to experiment with pop art on him.

Duplicating the layer

I duplicated the layer and titled the duplicated layer source. This is how i am going to then be able to colour in my subject image by making a seperate layer.

Using the brush tool

I selected the Brush tool clicking the command buttons CMD+B. I am going to use the brush tool to colour in the white background behind my subject. I am going to colour it green because it is a nice bright colour that stands out and i personally think blends well with the subject as he his main background is in a green colour.

Pre production files

Pre production is the creative and logistical process of planning the production elements needed to produce a film, TV show, play among other forms of creative performances. It is the first of the three step production processes followed by production and post production.

Pre production checklist

This is a pre production checklist. A pre production checklist is essential within the production of film or music video as there are a lot of pre production stages to factor when doing production.

story treatment

A film treatment is a summary of a film and Television show. A film treatment communicates all of the essential themes, scenes, and tones of the project to entice or pitch to buyers and producers into reading, developing or even purchasing your idea. A film treatment needs to be short and snappy but engaging and long enough to cover all the plot points and sell the story.

A script is the document that contains the setting, characters, dialogue and the stage direction for a film or TV show. During the phase of pre production the script is broken down into individual scenes with storyboards and all the identified locations, props, cast members, special and visual effects as well as costumes.
